Mail Use Stamps
term used by the <#usps=United States Postal Service> for stamps intended for use on mail.
Provisional Stamp
a <#stamp> produced as an interim (temporary) measure to meet an immediate need. Such stamps are often made by <#overprint=overprinting> existing stamps. Example: the first <#cigarettetubest-gen=Cigarette Tubes Stamp> (RH1), which is an overprint on a <#documentary=Documentary> Stamp.
Rate Mark
a numeral placed on a <#stamplessletter-gen=stampless letter> at its place of origin indicating the amount to be collected from the addressee.
Canal Zone
a territory leased to the United States from 1904 to 1979 and for which <#stamp=stamps> were issued. Those stamps include <#overprint=overprinted> issues of Panama and the U.S., and stamps designed and printed specifically for the Canal Zone by the <#bep=Bureau of Engraving and Printing>.
